The business was established in 1986 and has its headquarters there. VCA was listed on the NASDAQ under the symbol “WOOF” up until it was purchased by Mars in 2017.
Three executives from healthcare organizations—Neil Tauber, Robert (Bob) and Arthur (Art) Antin, and Robert Tauber—founded VCA in 1986. The name stands for “Veterinary Centers of America.” West Los Angeles Veterinary Hospital was the first animal hospital that VCA purchased.

VCA acquired Sound Technologies, a business that provided veterinary hospitals with digital radiology and ultrasound technology, in October 2004. Eklin Medical Systems, a provider of diagnostic imaging, was acquired by VCA in July 2009 and integrated with Sound Sound/Antech Imaging Services will use several technologies.
In 2014, Beverly Hills Pet Hotels, Inc. licensed The Barkley Pet Hotel & Day Spa brand in Westlake Village, California, and VCA purchased the dog daycare facility Camp Bow Wow, which has roughly 140 franchises in the US and one in Canada.

VCA will be operated as a separate division inside Mars Petcare after being purchased by Mars Inc. for $9.1 billion, the company stated on January 9th, 2017. Bob Antin, the CEO of VCA, kept his job.
